The Los Angeles Rams made some big changes in the offseason with the hiring of Sean McVay as the youngest head coach in league history. Prior to joining the Rams, McVay was calling plays for Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins.

Despite his green resume, McVay helped Washington become one of the top offenses in the league during the 2016-17 NFL season. During an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, McVay was asked if he would not have taken this job unless he thought Jared Goff was a suitable quarterback:

“Let’s put it this way. This is a great opportunity to be one of 32. This is something you strive to do. But you know when you got a guy that you think projects as somebody that gives you a chance, you feel good about it. Because if you don’t have that guy, it’s tough sledding.”

Despite a rough rookie outing, McVay was impressed with Goff’s accountability and taking the initiative to improve his game:

“One thing that I really liked about him, a lot of times when things don’t go your way, you have a tendency to blame other people. All he did was take accountability and never took the easy way out.”

There is certainly more optimism this time around following the team’s offseason training activities and minicamp. The former first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft says he feels much more confident with his understanding of the new offense.

There were a number of reasons that attributed to Goff’s struggles last season. However, the Rams predicated their moves this offseason on building around him with the hope that they will see signs of a return on their heavy investment.
